Bank Ekonomi – A Brief History

PT Bank Ekonomi Raharja is a commercial banking institution origins from PT Bank Mitra Raharja established on 15 May 1989. Four months later, the Bank was renamed PT Bank Ekonomi Raharja (also called Bank Ekonomi as of now). Bank Indonesia names it sound bank for 24 consecutive months. Thanks to its good assessment results, its status was raised to an Exchange Bank in 1992 allowing it to extend and improve its services to public.

On 22 May 2009, HSBC Holdings Plc. through its subsidiary, HSBC Asia Pacific Holdings (UK) Limited, acquired 88.89% shares of the bank through a tender offer. Thereupon it increased its shareholding to 98.96%. As a member of HSBC Group, Bank Ekonomi is part of one of the strongest financial institutions in the world.

The Bank is currently supported by more than 1,900 staff in its 90 branches and 30 cities throughout the country such as Jakarta, Bekasi, Tangerang, Bogor, Bandung, Cirebon, Semarang, Solo, Kudus, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Sidoarjo, Malang, Medan, Batam, Palembang, Pekanbaru, Pangkal Pinang, Bandar Lampung, Makassar, Manado, Banjarmasin, Balikpapan, Pontianak, Samarinda, Denpasar, Jambi, Pati, and Purwokerto.

The Bank’s primary focus is on SME segment. It has also installed 127 ATMs linked to the network of ATM Bersama and Prima enabling its ATM cards used at over 45,000 networked ATMs. It also offers phone banking, internet banking and BE Care services in order to improve customer satisfaction. Moreover, to support the initiatives on the undergone transformation, HUB (HSBC Universal Banking System) system is implemented. HUB is the cutting-edge of HSBC Group banking system integrating branches regardless of distance and time. It does not only connect well any divisions and branches of Bank Ekonomi but also HSBC global network worldwide.

In conducting its business, the Bank is also committed to striving for innovations and breakthrough to maintain its predicate as a strong and trusted private national bank. This is reflected in the following awards: “The Best Bank in BUKU 2 in 2014” from Perbanas, “Bronze Champion of Indonesia WOW Brand 2015, Category Saving Account (BUKU I+II)” from MarkPlus Insight, serta “Bronze Champion of Indonesia WOW Brand 2015, Category Conventional Bank (BUKU I+II), Region Sumatera” also from MarkPlus Insight.

A Brief History of HSBC in Indonesia

HSBC has a long history in Indonesia. It opened its first branch in the country in Jakarta in 1884. The bank initially served the sugar trade and then expanded its operation to the city of Surabaya in 1896. Today, it operates more than 38 branches in six cities across the country – Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya, Medan and Batam.
