Bank Ekonomi – A Brief History

PT Bank Ekonomi Raharja, Tbk., is a commercial banking institution origins from PT Bank Mitra Raharja established on 15 May 1989 which was renamed PT Bank Ekonomi Raharja (also called Bank Ekonomi) four months later. Bank Indonesia names it sound bank for 24 consecutive months. Thanks to its good assessment results, its status was raised to Exchange Bank in 1992 allowing it to extend and improve its services to public.

Bank Ekonomi is listed at Indonesia Stock Exchange. On 22 May 2009 HSBC Holdings Plc. through its subsidiary, HSBC Asia Pacific Holdings (UK) Limited, acquired 88.89% shares of the bank through a tender offer. Thereupon it increased its shareholding to 98.96%. As a member of HSBC Group, Bank Ekonomi is part of the strongest global financial institution.

More than 2,600 staff back Bank Ekonomi in its 99 branches and 31 cities throughout the country such as Jakarta, Bekasi, Tangerang, Bogor, Bandung, Cirebon, Semarang, Solo, Kudus, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Sidoarjo, Malang, Medan, Rantau Prapat, Batam, Palembang, Pekanbaru, Pangkal Pinang, Bandar Lampung, Makassar, Manado, Banjarmasin, Balikpapan, Pontianak, Samarinda, Denpasar, Jambi, Pati, and Purwokerto.

Its focus is on SME segment. It has also installed 122 ATMs linked to the network of ATM Bersama and Prima enabling its ATM cards used at over 37,000 networked ATMs. It also offers phone banking, internet banking and BE Care services in order to improve customer satisfaction. Moreover, to support the initiatives on the undergone transformation, HUB (HSBC Universal Banking System) system is implemented. HUB is the cutting-edge of HSBC Group banking system integrating branches regardless of distance and time. It does not only connect well any divisions and branches of Bank Ekonomi but also HSBC global network worldwide.

Its management is also committed to striving for innovations and breakthrough to maintain its predicate as a strong and secure private national bank. This is reflected in the following awards: “Best Performance Banking 2010” announced by Asian Banking Finance and Informatic (ABFI), “Customer Loyalty Award 2011” by Prima, “10 Best Performance Banking 2011” by Infobank magazine, “Indonesia Service to Care Champion 2012” by Marketeers magazine, and “10 Best Bank Service Excellence 2012” by MRI and Infobank magazine.

A Brief History of HSBC Local and Global Presence

HSBC has operated in Indonesia since its establishment in 1884 in Jakarta (formerly known as Batavia). First it served sugar trading which was indispensable at that era. It then expanded its business to Semarang and Surabaya. During World War II and mid 1960-ish, HSBC did not operate temporarily. Since obtaining its licence again in 1968, it has resumed operation. Its 47 branches including 5 branches of HSBC Amanah serve customers in 6 major cities like Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Batam and Medan. Supported by no less than 3,000 staff, HSBC Indonesia has now flourished in Indonesia and became a leading international bank offering services in retail banking, wealth management, corporate and institutional banking, treasury, capital market, and syariah banking.
